These are the

Dated: 17-06-1992.
My mind was
upset as I have not received any communication from my daughter and son-in-law
and prayed Sai to take care of them. That night I had the vision of a couple
landing on a beautiful Rock with the help of a Parachute. They spent the time
merrily over there and finally landed on a green stretch of Land. I was
thinking about and recalling the scene when my neighbor Shri.G.Sudharshan Rao
informed me of the Telephonic message received for me and conveyed that the
Couple after their honeymoon stint has well settled in their place of work. Sai
in order to remove the worries from my mind has shown this appropriate scene.
Sincere prayer calls are always answered.
Dated: 23-06-1992.
I was not
doing well both physically and mentally. Sai appeared in the form of LAMA whom
I happened to visit during my trip to Korea .He advised me to take medicines so
that I do not fall sick. Next day morning I consulted our family Doctor and got
the medicines prescribed. I could not but recollect the contents of the 28th chapter of Sai Satcharitra where Sai told
Lala Lakshmichand to take medicines for his back pain. This has proved the fact
that though Sai is not available in his physical form, takes care of his
devotees by offering suitable guidance and issuing instructions.
Trust me to take care of you no matter how far we are.
Dated: 18-08-1992.
Sai appeared
in the form of an unknown person and advised to look for victory even in
defeat. Winning and loosing are the two facets of the same coin. Mr.Robert
Swell who contested for the post of the President after having lost the
elections is happily settled in his life.
Even Sai also took part in a Wrestling competition with Moin-ud-in. He
lost and later realized the importance of the underlying winning in a defeat
and subsequently changed his style of living by opting for a carefree life and
resorted to wearing simple costumes.
It is the state of mind that determines the outcome and
learn to take the result on an equilibrilium.

5. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SAI SATCHARITRA :

Sai Ram. We
saw how Sai pulled various devotees to His feet, so that they got what they
wanted and in that process got spiritually closer to Him. The devotees thus
became better vessels to receive Divine Grace in that birth and in their future
births. Sai Ram. Now let us take up the main story of this beautiful chapter.
Ruttonji of Nanded:
"Now let us come to the main story of this Chapter. In Nanded, in the
Nizam state, there lived a Parsi mill-contractor and trader, by name Ruttonji
Shapurji Wadia." Sai Ram. This
name is spelt in another text as Ratanji, which thus gives the meaning of
Jewel, ji being a respectful epithet. Thus Ratan means a Jewel or Gem and this
is appropriate when we are trying to discuss the spiritual gems from Sai's
Satcharitra.
"He had amassed a large amount of money and had acquired fields and lands.
He had got cattle, horses and conveyances and was very prosperous. To all
outward appearances he looked very happy and contented, but inwardly, and
really he was not so." Sai Ram. As
long as we operate with an ego, however good it may be, we limit our perception
and thus can never be fully happy. Only Siva is Supremely Happy (Siva also
means one who gives happiness and He gives us happiness just as Sun gives us
light). Thus Ratanji (I prefer this spelling) was not fully happy. The reason
is given below. "Providential dispensation is such, that no one in this
world is completely happy and rich; Ruttonji was no exception to this. He was
liberal and charitable, gave food and clothing to the poor and helped all in
various ways. The people took him to be a good and happy man, but Ruttonji
thought himself miserable as he had no issue, male or female, for a long
time."
Sai Ram. "Aputrasya Gatir Nasti" is the Sanskrit Sloka, which gives
the same meaning. One's progress through the various planes of karma is
dependent on the begetting of a male child. This has no relevance to male
chauvinism. A father's chromosomes inherited from his father are transmitted to
his son and not to his daughter. Thus the absence of a male offspring is
directly linked to the evil effects of previous karma. This explains the great
pains and sacrifices our ancestors made in the form of performing various
penances and rituals (Yagnas etc.)
"As Kirtan (singing glories of the Lord) without love or devotion,
music or singing without rhythmical accompaniments, Brahmin without the sacred
thread, proficiency in all arts without commonsense, pilgrimage without
repentance and ornamentation without a necklace, are ugly and useless, so is
the house of a man or house-holder without a male issue." This amplified
what is given above. Sai Ram.
"Ruttonji always brooded on this matter and said in his mind, "Would
God be ever pleased to grant me a son?" He thus looked morose, had no
relish for his food. Day and night, he was enveloped with anxiety whether he
would ever be blessed with a son. He had a great regard for Dasganu Maharaj. He
saw him and opened his heart before him. Dasganu advised him to go to Shirdi,
take Baba's darshan, fall at His Feet and seek His blessing and pray for issue.
Ruttonji liked the idea, and decided to go to Shirdi." Sai Ram. Here we are given a great secret.
Whether Dasaratha sought the advice of Vasishtha or Ratanji that of Dasganu,
the principle is clear and simple. When we are beset with problems, which we
cannot solve, we should seek the help of Sants and Sadhus. Dasganu Maharaj was
a great devotee of Sai and it was not a wonder that Ratanji took his advice.
After getting advice, one must act on the advice given. "After some days he went to Shirdi,
took Baba's darshan and fell at His Feet. Then opening a basket, he took out a
beautiful garland of flowers and placed it around Baba's neck and offered Him a
basket of fruits."
One should not go to Guru, God and Children (in whom God shines much more
clearly) with empty hands. One should think of the God indwelling in one's
heart as manifesting in an external form as a Guru, God or an innocent child
(children are free from ego and are thus excellent channels of Divine Energy).
To pay one's respect to such a God is but natural and offering flowers and
fruits is a befitting way. Patram, Pushpam, Phalam, Thoyam...Leaf, Flower,
Fruit and Water... what ever is offered with devotion, I will accept gladly,
Krishna assures Arjuna in Gita. Thus Siva is pleased by Abhishekam with Bilva
leaves and water, Vishnu is pleased by worship with Tulasi leaves etc.
"With great respect he then sat near Baba, and prayed to Him saying-
"Many persons who find themselves in difficult situations come to You, and
You relieve them immediately. Hearing this, I have sought anxiously Your Feet;
please, therefore, do not disappoint me."
Sai Ram. A prardhana should be first preceded by a Stotra to God, Guru.
A heartfelt acknowledgement of the Greatness of God/Guru and the helplessness
of one's own ego is the requirement for the flow of Divine Grace. A full pot
cannot receive any more water. The pot must first be emptied. Similarly the ego
should first be cleared of pride, doubt etc. Then and only then will we become
fit to receive Divine Grace, which is always ready to bless us but is waiting
for the opportune moment. In Ratanji's case, his faithful prayer made him
ready.
"Sai Baba then asked him for Daksbina of Rs. five which Ruttonji intended
to give, but added, that He has already received Rs. 3-14-0 from him, and that
he should pay the balance only." Sai Ram. What a masterful stroke? In a
short and significant sentence, Sai showed His Sarvajnatva to Ratanji. He
showed how He is one with every other Sadhu. This will be made clear in the
following paragraphs.
We will now take a short break with prayers at His feet and will continue with
this nectar of bhakti in the next issue. Sai Ram.
Yours truly,
SV Swamy
